I haven’t always pictured myself as becoming a teacher. I instead have always thought of myself as a scientist, someone who cared deeply about the world around them with a growing curiosity and eagerness to learn. Through the years I’ve found that although I do enjoy the sciences, it is far more rewarding and challenging to share that joy through teaching.
As a teacher of science, I want to inspire my students to share my same curiosity and eagerness to learn by showing them to question the world around them, and never fear asking. I hope to instill a sense of what science is and to help my students understand that science is not as scary as some students tend to think it is, and it doesn’t have to be boring.
When I went through school as a student, I noticed that in junior high most of the kids around me lost interest in science class, and always thought it was too boring or too hard to even bother caring about. That is exactly what I want to stop. My main personal goal as a teacher is to try and keep these kids engaged in science. Although the material can be boring at times I hope to show them that it is important to understand the world around us, our own bodies, and engage in scientific thought processes. I plan on helping my students remain active learners with logical and methodical skills on approaching problems. Even when it gets to the point where socially it is unacceptable for to like science, because it's not 'cool', I want kids to look at my classroom as a place to throw that out the window and see how cool science can be.
In my classroom I will have an environment that students will feel safe to use their voice, free from the ridicule of others, and I want each of my students to understand that every idea is worth listening to. Some of the greatest scientists of all time were ridiculed for their ideas, but in the end they still made great discoveries. I want my students to realize that they are the future of this world, and they have the ideas and minds that will shape the world they end up living in. My classroom will be a place where mutual respect is a constant and anything less will not be tolerated.
Seeing myself now as not only a scientist, but also a teacher, I feel that my reach is more influential than ever. That being the case, I would like to picture my future classroom fostering student development of new ideas and providing opportunities for students to explore their own minds. I will not only be a role model and teacher within the classroom, but a mentor, not just preaching to kids about science but helping students discover thier own potential.
